Kim Porter, CFRS, is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Be a Part of the Conversation, a nonprofit organization that equips families and communities with the skills and resources to better understand substance use, addiction, and related behavioral health issues. The organization provides community programs, fosters supportive connections, gives voice to lived experiences, and challenges stigma.
As the parent of someone in long term recovery, Kim is passionate about helping communities understand the impact of addiction on individuals and their families. Kim is a Certified Family Recovery Specialist (CFRS), which equips her to provide peer support and share her lived experience with other families, working together to navigate recovery support services.
Kim earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism at West Virginia University, where she was proud to serve as student body president. She began her career as a newspaper advertising account executive, then learned the graphic design trade while working with her mentor and friend, Chuck Moran, at his design firm in Charlottesville, Virginia. For more than two decades, she worked as a graphic designer and marketing consultant before dedicating herself full-time to building and growing Be a Part of the Conversation.
In 2011, Kim collaborated with the Hatboro-Horsham School District to launch Be a Part of the Conversation as a community initiative. She considers it a profound honor to foster the organization’s growth that today serves thousands of individuals in Pennsylvania and beyond.
Kim currently lives in Newtown Square, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. She previously lived in Horsham Township for 22 years, where she and Michael raised two wonderful children who support this rewarding endeavor.
“When my family was impacted by addiction, our world suddenly became a dark and frightening place with little understanding of where to turn for help. Our family’s journey through recovery compelled me to explore creative ways to help raise awareness among those who often struggle in silence with a loved one’s substance use. I have found that most people have an open heart and mind, and want to learn all they can to support those who are in pain, as well as those in recovery. Helping to create Be a Part of the Conversation has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my experience, strength and hope!”
