Met Bill in the 90’s – great guy. Used to drive from Richmond Va just to attend his service at Caron. In 2000 he came down with Doug Teiman. They stayed at our house and Father Bill blessed our house. We had 25 beautiful years in that house till we downsized. Wonderful man.
In March of 2010, my then-husband, Michael, and I were preparing for our son’s intervention, desperately hoping that he’d agree to be admitted to Caron Treatment Center. Included in an email from their admissions office was a weekly patient schedule. Something that caught my eye was that “Caron Chapel” was mandatory for all patients. Our family has never followed any organized religion, so I was very concerned that my son would feel out of place, and I questioned why a rehab had this kind of practice. When Shelley, Sean and I moved to PA for my new job at Caron, I heard about the Drunk Monk and his Sunday Chapel Service. I checked it out and my initial reaction was similar to Mark Hushen’s intro to Fr Bill. As Mark put it, “I’m in the nut house and I just met the Head Cashew” !!!! Fr Bill would roam the campus, walking through the cafeteria’s, lounges, gym, stopping and chatting with the patients, shouting “HEY YOU KIDS“ to the adolescents and stopping by the adults, asking “’SUP?” !!!! There is so much I love about this beautiful human being! I think my favorite thing about Father Bill was how he had such strong values while remaining open and accepting. There is so much division in our country right now, and regardless of where you find yourself or what your beliefs, Father Bill would love and accept you as you are, give you blessings, and pray that you find your way. He was never shy about speaking his mind, including if he disagreed with you, but somehow he managed to be both blunt and empathetic all in one breath.… Read more »
Father Bill was clearly unique and one of a kind, though it was in his genuineness that he stood out among all others. His devotion to those in need, both addicts and family members, went without saying. When Kim and I first went to chapel in those early weeks of our son’s treatment at Caron, I don’t believe that either of us suspected just how important those services, and Father Bill, would become to our recovery both in those early years as well as the rest of our lives. If I had to use one word to describe Father Bill, it would be “fighter”. He was a fighter. Not for himself, but courageously and laser focused on helping his community. He had a tough upbringing in the foster system in Wilmington, DE. He joined the Oblates of Francis DeSales and, when he answered the call to duty, he served, among other duties, as a Navy Chaplin in Vietnam where he witnessed the most horrifying of human conditions. Happy birthday 🎈 I’ll never forget how compassionate you were with our daughter and all of us. We were so scared esp in the beginning and you calmed our hearts. I hope the tulips you gave our daughter to plant still grow each spring. God Bless you ❤️
Thinking of you today on your birthday! Though I think of you many more days than today. On difficult days, I still feel your love, reminding myself that even though you aren’t physically here, you left enough love on this earth to love us all when we’re not capable of loving ourselves. Your spirit lives on in all of us. And for that, every soul that ever met you is blessed.
